Harbor Management Meeting – Nov 2, 2009

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

The meeting open with discussions regarding the construction at the Public Landing.   Agregate Paving will be there on Wednesday to start the fine grading. A binder course 2 1/2″ thick and a top of 1″ will start either Thursday or Friday.

The piles for the new building has been added to the current contractor Argus who will subcontract to SeaShore. This should start possibly the end of this week and be done before paving starts.

New curbing will be started end of November after the binder is set. A binder will definitely be down before winter.

The big piles of dirt will be used to fill in some of the loom rather than having the expense of carting the piles away.

New benches and Seagull proof trash cans will be installed in the Spring.

All light bases have been installed except behind the loom pile.

There’s only 1 storm ceptor on the west side near the Winthrop Yacht Club. It has both an oil and water separator.

The new parking lot plans will include 35 – 40 more spots.

A Busy July – Inspite of the Weather

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

July 4 - every boat slip at the town marina was occupied for the 4th to enjoy the Horribles Parade, cookouts, great friends and the fireworks. (photos: http://tiny.cc/Jk4LS) In fact, some stayed an extra day due to the lousy weather. Unfortunately, there was one mishap during the spectacular fireworks where a boat was taken over by the wind and blown over to Coughlin Park where the fireworks were being set off.

July 8 – Tall Ships arrived in Boston and many spectators watched from the many great spots from Winthrop Beach, Deer Island, Landing and Cottage Park Yacht Club (CPYC). Four ships were supposed to come into CPYC, however, as we stood on the docks waiting, the Rachel B Jackson went straight into Fan Pier where a spot had opened up. The schooner, Maine, ended up in Boston as well and the other two Norse Viking and The Lark, never made it to Boston.

July 11 – Members from Winthrop Yacht Club and Mass Bay Sailing Club headed out for the weekend. First to Scituate for an overnight, then back to Spectacle Island for another overnight so they’d be ready to see the Tall Ships leaving.

July 13 – A great day was had by anyone who was either at Deer Island or lucky enough to be on the Harbor to watch as the following Tall Ships left Boston: Maine (Essex MA), Etoile (France), Sagres (Portugal), Pride of Baltimore II (USA), Coast Guard Bargue Eagle (USA), Europe (Netherlands), Cisne Branco (Brazil), Kruzenshtern (Russia), Capitan Miranda (Uruguay) and Libertad (Argentina) went out at sunset. photos http://tiny.cc/tallships.  A special thank you to assistant harbormasters Chuck Evans and Roger for taking me out for the day to get some wonderful photographs.   (more…)

Busy Columbus Day Week

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

MONDAY OCTOBER 6, Atlantic Boats pulled out 4 of the 5 boats they had shown at the boat show.

Remaining week was busy with people using the davit to pull engines, etc. for boat repairs; the ramp was busy with boats coming out for the season, lots of calls for pump-out.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 12, Mrs. Govoni from Palmyra St. showed up at the landing and asked if the barrels could be spray painted and refurbished. When she was told “yes”, Govoni gladly paid for the materials to have it done. Later that day, the Harbormaster, Mike Russo and Steve D’Amato repainted and stenciled all the barrels at the landing.

Gusty Winds Wreak Havoc

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

THURSDAY OCTOBER 2,

COTTAGE PARK YACHT CLUB (CPYC) a boat broke loose off its mooring at Cottage Park Yacht Club and ran aground alongside their westerly pier. A fast move by Tim Donovan (bartender), Bill Crotty (member), and Lou Todisco (Commodore), rescued the boat before any harm came to it. The harbormaster then picked the boat up and tied it up at the town pier.

Harbor Management Committee starts up again?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 22, Harbor Management Committee met with Tom Reilly in anticipation of re-establishing the group. The committee’s main focus was to walk away with a working relationship with the town through a liaison (which doesn’t exist) to oversee all waterfront issues.  This committee’s purpose is to discuss the pros and cons of waterfront projects then, make recommendations back to this liaison person – who then reports back to the city councilors and town manager.  After two hours of discussion, the group walked away shaking their heads and Tom Reilly said he would try to find someone for them. According to some of the members I spoke with, unless there’s a liaison, there’s no sense in dealing with these issues.

The “Big Storm”

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Saturday September 6, the “Big Storm” turned out to be nothing during the day, but worse than people expected during the evening hours.   Though the harbormaster’s office made the decision not to clear out the harbor, the launch was busy Friday and Saturday with people taking their boats out.  As the storm picked up overnight, Joe Houghton (Houghton Marine) went around checking all the moorings to make sure everybody’s lines were straight. A visit to all the yacht clubs was made to help if necessary. According to Joe, “Though the winds were rough, we didn’t lose any boats, everything was pretty secure”.

Sunday September 7, today’s activities weren’t deferred by the storm; in fact, Winthrop harbor was busy with great fishing, tournaments and regattas.
