A Busy July – Inspite of the Weather

July 4 - every boat slip at the town marina was occupied for the 4th to enjoy the Horribles Parade, cookouts, great friends and the fireworks. (photos: http://tiny.cc/Jk4LS) In fact, some stayed an extra day due to the lousy weather. Unfortunately, there was one mishap during the spectacular fireworks where a boat was taken over by the wind and blown over to Coughlin Park where the fireworks were being set off.

July 8 – Tall Ships arrived in Boston and many spectators watched from the many great spots from Winthrop Beach, Deer Island, Landing and Cottage Park Yacht Club (CPYC). Four ships were supposed to come into CPYC, however, as we stood on the docks waiting, the Rachel B Jackson went straight into Fan Pier where a spot had opened up. The schooner, Maine, ended up in Boston as well and the other two Norse Viking and The Lark, never made it to Boston.

July 11 – Members from Winthrop Yacht Club and Mass Bay Sailing Club headed out for the weekend. First to Scituate for an overnight, then back to Spectacle Island for another overnight so they’d be ready to see the Tall Ships leaving.

July 13 – A great day was had by anyone who was either at Deer Island or lucky enough to be on the Harbor to watch as the following Tall Ships left Boston: Maine (Essex MA), Etoile (France), Sagres (Portugal), Pride of Baltimore II (USA), Coast Guard Bargue Eagle (USA), Europe (Netherlands), Cisne Branco (Brazil), Kruzenshtern (Russia), Capitan Miranda (Uruguay) and Libertad (Argentina) went out at sunset. photos http://tiny.cc/tallships.  A special thank you to assistant harbormasters Chuck Evans and Roger for taking me out for the day to get some wonderful photographs.

July 16 – Cottage Park Yacht Club held their N-10 regatta.

July 17 – A call was placed to State Police for assistance with an inflated vessel being operated by someone who had no knowledge of what he was doing. State Police ended up taking the boat away.

July 18 – Meet and greet with lobster guys was held on the beach. According to Larry Bradley, the kids had such a great time, they’re doing another one this summer in Hull. And, Captain Lou of Nautical Talk Radio will be interviewing Larry at some point about this endeavor. Dave McAuliffe (asst. harbormaster) escorted some vessels from Nantasket Beach SWC as they invaded both Winthrop and Pleasant Park Yacht Clubs. Robert McDougal (asst harbormaster) had to intervene at a party on the pier where kids were misbehaving.
Last, as you can imagine, with all the boats in the harbor, the pumpout boat was rather busy.

July 19 – Chuck Famolare rescued 3 boats while out on the harbor with his family. One boat broke down off Winthrop Yacht Club, another tipped over their sail and got stuck in the mud, while 2 people hit wood in the vicinity of Faun Bar.

Upcoming events:

Cottage Park Yacht Club -
July 31 – will be closing the parking lot
Aug 1 – 2 – holds their Make a Wish Regatta

Winthrop Yacht Club -
Aug 1 – CCOA summer cruise
Aug 8 – Winthrop Yacht Club returns the invasion at Nantasket Beach SWOA

Other News:

There’s a new vessel (Argo) docked at the Town Marina. This is being captained by Tim Grover, it’s a 149 passenger and will be running site seeing charters from the pier.

Clarke Heighton will be onsite at the Landing with his cart selling hot dogs, sausages and cold drinks. His permit is for 7 days a week, 9am to 9pm. However, due to the weather (rain and mostly wind), Clarke is not guaranteed to be there.

Pumpout boat available. For service contact the harbormasters office.

The marina is full with rented slips, however, there are 2, possibly 3 transient slips available. Check with the harbormaster’s office for more details.

Got a question for the harbormaster? Don’t spend time trying to chase him down. It’s easier to goto: Ask the Harbormaster section on this site and submit your questions there. (Chuck does answer them!)

That’s it!  Stay Safe!
